quickie

Haven’t blogged for a while now (save the short entry on IncrediRoo) so here’re some updates on the goings-on in my life…

I’m totally hooked on Jericho! It’s about this small town in rural Kansas and the experience of its people in the aftermath of nuclear wipeouts of major cities in the US.If you guys have never seen it, go get the DVD and I assure you, it’s totally worth it.

I’ve finished the entire 22-episode First Season, and am now waiting anxiously for the Second. To my horror, my hubs informed me that the sequel season has been cancelled due to poor ratings! I really don’t get it cuz I reckon the show’s nail-bitingly awesome; waaay better than Lost. But I guess the Americans are a nervous lot lately, and perhaps the nightmare of 9/11 is still too fresh in their minds.

Anyway, this cancellation was to my great dismay because the last episode was a major cliffhanger and I need closure, people! But apparently, I’m not alone…

CBS officially announced Jericho's cancellation on May 16, 2007. Several online communities, including the official Jericho forums, launched campaigns in an effort to revive the show. This included online petitions, the largest petition claiming over 115,000 electronic signatures as of June 18. Fans also sent just over 20 tons of nuts to CBS headquarters, in a reference to a scene in the final episode where Jake Green repeats General Anthony McAuliffe's historic phrase "Nuts!" from the Battle of Bastogne. The peanuts and other proceeds from the donations have been donated to charities, including the rebuilding effort in Greensburg, Kansas. – wikipedia.com

Thank god the CBS people decided to produce seven "closure" episodes!

My father had a heart attack. When I heard about it, I felt my own corazón stop especially since I hadn’t seen him in about a week at that time (reason for this in third quickie below).

He had chest pains after Friday prayers, but thought at first that it was just a muscle pull or heartburn. He tried to stretch it out and the pain went away. Two hours later, however, it came back with a vengeance and so he decided to consult the GP. The doc advised him to get admitted into the hospital, and so he ended up spending the night in the ICU. A blessing in disguise this proved to be, because although the specialist who tested him said that he’s stable, my Abah had a minor heart attack at 3am. Thank goodness he was wired to the machines!

Anyway, this specialist found 90% blockages in 3 arteries and recommended a bypass within 30 days. Of course, my siblings and I frantically searched for anyone with contacts at the IJN to get second opinion, and I’m touched by the many friends who quickly rose to the occasion—¡muchísimas gracias, everyone!

Well, my dad has since seen one of the top cardiologists in IJN who delivered the good news that a bypass isn’t needed after all. So, yesterday my dad went for this procedure called angioplasty which involves a balloon-like thingie being inserted into the artery for the purpose of widening it. Dad’s back home now, alhamdulillah.

Gotta tell you that my Abah does not have high cholesterol and does his checks regularly. So this was quite a shocker to us. All I can say is, please pay attention to the pains and aches because that’s just your body’s way of telling you that something’s wrong.

Don’t really wanna elaborate too much on this, but Quickie #3 is the main reason behind this blog being almost stagnant over the past few weeks. Well, this futsal fanatic has been training under the Malaysian coach for a chance to be picked for our nation’s first batch of national ladies futsal team. Training was rather psychotic—2 hours in the a.m. and 2 in the p.m.—for 2 whole weeks!

We were allowed home a week early (yay us!) and will report back on the 13th where we’ll be returning to intensive training for about a week before we fly to Bangkok for a week of friendly games. Pretty exciting but tiring stuff... and scary, too!

Anyway, in the meantime I’m juggling nursing some injuries (nothing serious, just “overused tissues” says the sports doc) with thrice-weekly state training in preparation for the national league organized by FAM and FELDA. Again, really taxing (especially the commute between Keramat-Klang/Shah Alam-Keramat) but as I see it, it’s now or never for me.

Finally, today’s my last day with Watson Wyatt. Looking forward to lazing around and playing loads of futsal over the next 6 months or so before yet another major change in my life might happen… but I’ll save that story for another time ;)

incrediRoo!

Was watching The Incredibles (one of my favourite cartoons of all time) again the other day and noticed the uncanny resemblance between Incredi-Boy aka Syndrome and Wayne Rooney...
... innit?
